It serves as a substrate for luciferases and photoproteins like aequorin, which emit blue light (emission maximum, 460-470 nm) upon oxidation of coelenterazine to coelenteramide. This bioluminescent reaction is calcium-dependent, making coelenterazine-based systems valuable tools for monitoring intracellular calcium levels and redox states in biological research.
