Description

Beta-Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (β-hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone primarily produced by the placenta during pregnancy and is normally detected in the blood and urine of pregnant women. In addition to its physiological role, β-hCG can be ectopically produced by certain malignant tumors. Elevated β-hCG concentrations may be associated with germ cell tumors of the testis and ovary, gestational trophoblastic disease, and, less commonly, malignancies of the liver, stomach, pancreas, lung, and several other organs. As a result, β-hCG is widely used as a tumor marker to assist in cancer diagnosis, evaluate treatment response, and monitor disease recurrence.
