Why Some People Are More Susceptible to SARS-CoV-2?
As COVID19 continues to rage across the US and around the world, scientists and physicians continue to be perplexed by why some younger patients with no underlying conditions succumb to SARS-CoV-2. In addition, these victims are disproportionately male.
Now a research article published in Science by Bastard et al. may have provided some clues to the mystery. Bastard’s research shows that about 14% of critically ill COVID19 patients have autoantibodies against Type I interferons, namely IFN α2 and IFN ω. A portion of these autoantibody carriers also have autoantibodies against IFN γ, GM-CSF, TNF α, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, IL-17, and IL-22. Men are disproportionately represented due to the high possibility that the production of autoantibodies is driven by mutations on the X chromosome.
