Description
Mitochondria Complex III, or Ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase (EC1.10.2.2), plays a crucial role in the oxidative phosphorylation process in mitochondria, which is essential for ATP production. Mutations of mitochondria Complex III were reported to be involved in many diseases’ pathologies, such as neuron degenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes. It catalyzes the reduction of cytochrome c by oxidation of coenzyme Q (CoQ) and the accompany pumping of 4 protons from the mitochondrial matrix to the intermembrane space, as shown in Fig.1 below.
The activity of Complex III is directly measured through the increase of reduction of cytochrome c at absorbance of 550nm. This kit uses cytochrome c as substrate. The reduced cytochrome c is determined by recording the change in absorbance (A550).
