Description

Description: CD56 is a single-pass transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is prominently expressed on natural killer (NK) cells, as well as on certain T cells, dendritic cells, monocytes, and various neural and muscle tissues. In the nervous system, CD56 plays a critical role in cell adhesion, axon guidance, and synaptic plasticity, contributing to learning and memory. In the immune system, it facilitates NK cell migration, polarization, and cytotoxic function, and its expression is used to distinguish NK cell subsets with distinct functional profiles.
